Recently, the Kunwu fully orthopedic surgical robot, developed by Nanshan-based Yuanhua Intelligent Technology, successfully completed Hong Kong's first robot-assisted direct anterior approach (DAA) total hip arthroplasty at the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital. This marks a new milestone in the clinical application of domestically produced smart medical equipment in Hong Kong.

Dr. Lam from the hospital's orthopedic department performed the operation on a 69-year-old female patient who had long suffered from bilateral hip pain and severely limited mobility. Preoperative examinations revealed severe congenital hip dysplasia on her left side and hip osteoarthritis on her right, with the right side causing more intense pain. The medical team decided to replace her right hip first.
Considering the patient's urgent need for rapid recovery, Dr. Lam's team, after thorough deliberation, adopted the Kunwu robot-assisted DAA minimally invasive procedure. According to Lam, the core advantage of the DAA approach is that it does not cut through key hip muscles, resulting in less trauma and faster recovery. However, it demands extremely high surgical precision, as even slight deviations could affect postoperative outcomes. The Kunwu robot can serve as a precision navigation system during the surgery.

To ensure success, the Kunwu clinical engineering team adjusted the positioning of the robotic arm and simulated the surgical workflow before the operation. During the procedure, the robot generated a three-dimensional surgical plan based on preoperative CT data, providing real-time digital support such as acetabular reaming navigation and prosthesis angle monitoring. It ensured that lower limb length and offset were precisely aligned with the preoperative design, minimizing damage to surrounding soft tissues. Postoperative imaging showed accurate prosthesis placement, with all indicators meeting the preoperative planning targets. The patient was discharged just two days after surgery, demonstrating the technical advantages of combining the DAA minimally invasive approach with robotic assistance.
The Kunwu fully orthopedic surgical robot can be used for orthopedic procedures including knee, hip, spine, and trauma surgeries. Its core components and control systems are all independently developed, which significantly reduces purchase and maintenance costs. Designed to assist in joint replacement surgeries with sub-millimeter precision, the surgical robot has received a Hong Kong Emerging Brand Award from the Hong Kong Brand Development Council (BDC).
In 2022, Yuanhua Intelligent Technology established its international headquarters in the Hong Kong Science Park.
